FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Learning Lab students are all enrolled in their own school that provides learning goals, instructor support, and curriculum resources. The Learning Lab is a place for students to pursue their own self-directed learning in a supported and supervised setting.

The Learning Lab is located in the Riverfront Center adjacent to The Powerhouse. In the Learning Lab there are desktop computers provided by PCs for People and basic school materials needed to do work (pencils, paper, etc.). Students should bring with them their schoolwork assigned to them by their teachers and a free-reading book for breaks.

Probably not. If your school is expecting synchronous learning throughout the school day, the Learning Lab would be of limited value and use. Our goal is to pair dedicated learning time with extracurricular opportunities and a full day commitment to an online presence does not align with that approach.

How do you determine cohort sizes and groupings?

How do students transition from the academic portion of the day to their enrichment site?

How much does it cost to participate in the Learning Lab?

Families register for one five-week Learning Lab session at a time and the full cost is $250 per session. The majority of participants pay less than the full $50 per day fee.

Members of The Powerhouse and participating enrichment programs receive a 10% discount. Scholarships for students who qualify for the federal lunch program lower the cost to $5 per day and a second tier of scholarships provides a 40% discount for eligible families (incomes below $52,400 for a family of four).

Can we expect consistent safety protocols for participants?

How will the Learning Lab respond if a participant reports a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19?

Should a child fall ill during camp, we will isolate them and parents will be immediately notified. Should an educator fall ill, we have backup staff on site ready to step in. If your child tests positive for Covid during Lab or within the following 2 weeks, notify the Learning Lab so that SJBHC and everyone in that camp can be notified. The same will be done for a sick educator.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Cancelations 7 or more days before camp will receive a 90% refund.

If the Learning Lab has to close due to COVID reasons, pro-rated refunds will be given based on number of sessions run to date.

If you need to keep your child home because they are experiencing COVID symptoms, pro-rated refunds will be given based on number of sessions run to date.

If your child is dismissed from Learning Lab due to disciplinary issues, no refund will be given.

Cohorts are built based on grade level and whether your child is doing fully remote learning or blended in the schools. Cohort size is based on the space in the Learning Lab and is limited to a maximum of 12 students.

Most of our enrichment sites are located within walking distance from the Learning Lab and students will walk between the two locations with an adult. Transportation is provided if the location is farther away.
